Your first experience with clay, the pottery wheel and handbuilding.
A 2.5 hour session where you can discover ceramics from scratch: get to know the clay, understand the main stages of the ceramic process and make your first pieces using handbuilding techniques.
During the session, you will also have a short individual experience on the pottery wheel. This will introduce you to another way of working with clay and help you discover which technique you would like to continue practising.

A first class to discover ceramics from scratch
This workshop is designed for anyone who is curious about ceramics but does not yet know where to begin. You do not need any previous knowledge or artistic skills, and there is no need to arrive with a project in mind.
During the session, you will discover two different ways of working with clay and receive guidance at every step.

We will begin with the essentials: how clay behaves, how to use the tools and what to expect from your first session.

You can try the pottery wheel and handbuilding before choosing regular classes or a monthly option.

What you will do in your first ceramics workshop in Madrid
The session combines a practical introduction to the pottery wheel with your first experience of handbuilding.
Get to know clay and the ceramic process
You will learn how clay behaves and discover the main stages each piece goes through: making, drying, bisque firing, glazing and glaze firing.
Make your own pieces using handbuilding techniques
Most of the session will be dedicated to handbuilding, using a simple and accessible technique that allows you to explore the material and make your first pieces.
Try the pottery wheel for the first time
Each participant will have a few minutes of individual practice on the pottery wheel to experience working with moving clay and understand the difference between wheel throwing and handbuilding.
Discover how you would like to continue
By trying two different ways of working with clay, you will have a clearer idea of which option suits you if you decide to continue learning.

Two ways of working with clay
During the workshop, you will focus mainly on handbuilding and also have a brief introduction to the pottery wheel. The aim is not to learn both techniques in depth in a single session, but to experience two different ways of working with clay and discover which one you would like to explore further.
On the pottery wheel, you will have an initial introduction to the technique: you will learn about posture, basic movements and how the clay responds as it turns beneath your hands.
With handbuilding, you construct the piece directly on the table. It is a freer technique that allows you to explore the material and create without relying on the movement of the pottery wheel.
Trying both techniques will help you discover which one you enjoy most and how you would like to continue.
What the introduction workshop includes
One 2.5-hour session
Enough time to get to know the ceramics studio, receive an introduction and try the techniques without turning the experience into a rushed demonstration.
Clay, tools and equipment
Everything you need during the session is provided, including use of the pottery wheel and the studio tools.
Personalised guidance
The workshop takes place in a small group, allowing time to answer your questions and help you through your first attempts.
Handbuilding + pottery wheel experience
You will work mainly with handbuilding techniques and have a brief individual experience on the pottery wheel so you can discover both ways of working with clay.
What happens to your pieces after the workshop
Ceramic pieces cannot be taken home finished at the end of the class. They must first dry slowly and go through the kiln.
At the end of the session, you can decide whether you would like the studio to fire your work. Firing is optional and costs €15 for up to three pieces.
Rámica will let you know when they are ready for collection.
How to prepare for your first ceramics class
Comfortable clothes
Clay washes out easily, but it is best to wear clothes that allow you to move and work without worrying about small marks.
Short nails and tied-back hair
Short nails make working on the pottery wheel easier. If you have long hair, we recommend tying it back during the session.
Remove your jewellery
Remove rings, bracelets and watches to prevent them from being scratched, getting dirty or collecting clay.
You do not need to bring any materials
The workshop provides all the clay, tools and equipment you need. You only need to arrive ready to give it a try.

Optional firing: an additional €15 for up to three pieces.

Do I need any previous experience?
No. The workshop is designed for people who have never worked with clay, and we will begin with the basics.
Will I use the pottery wheel?
Yes. During the session, you will have a first experience on the pottery wheel and also be introduced to handbuilding.
Can I come on my own?
Yes. You can book individually. The workshop takes place in a small group with other people who are also getting started.
Can I take my pieces home on the same day?
No. The clay needs to dry and be fired before it becomes a finished piece. If you choose the firing option, Rámica will let you know when your work is ready for collection.
How much does it cost to fire my pieces?
Firing is optional and costs €15 for up to three pieces. You can decide at the end of the session.
Do I have to join monthly classes afterwards?
No. This is a standalone session. You can continue with regular classes afterwards if you would like to keep practising, but there is no obligation.
