Classes tailored to your level
These classes are designed both for people who have never used a pottery wheel and for those who already have some experience and want to continue practising. Not everyone in the group has to work on the same exercise: the teacher adapts her guidance to each student’s stage of learning and individual project.
If you are starting from scratch, you will first work on posture, coordination and the fundamental movements. If you already have experience, you can improve your centring, gain better control over wall thickness, repeat forms and work towards more complex pieces.
Repetition is an essential part of learning to throw. The first few classes are not about producing lots of pieces, but about understanding the material and gaining control over each movement.
What you will learn in pottery wheel classes
You will prepare the clay and learn how to position and stabilise it in the centre of the pottery wheel. You will also work on posture, wheel speed and hand placement.
You will practise opening the clay and gradually pulling up the walls while controlling pressure, water and wall thickness.
You will learn how to alter the profile to create open, straight-sided, curved or closed forms, depending on your level and the project you are working on.
Once the piece has reached the right consistency, you will learn how to trim the base, refine the thickness and achieve a cleaner finish.
What you can make on the pottery wheel
Functional pieces, without predetermined outcomes
With practice, you will be able to make bowls, beakers, mugs, plates, small vases, plant pots and vessels with open or closed forms.
What you make will depend on your experience, the exercise you are working on and the time you need to master each movement. We do not expect the whole group to produce identical pieces, nor do we promise a specific finished piece in the first session.
Learning to repeat a form, control its proportions and improve it from one session to the next is part of the process.
How a pottery wheel class works
You prepare your workstation and clay, then review the exercise or stage of the piece you will be working on with the teacher.
You work independently at the pottery wheel, receiving corrections on posture, pressure, speed and movement whenever you need them.
Depending on its condition, the piece is kept for trimming, prepared for drying, or the clay is recycled so you can practise again.

The small group size allows every student to follow their own path while receiving ongoing technical guidance. You will get instructions tailored to your level and corrections as you practise, whether you are trying to centre clay for the first time or refine a particular form.

What is included in the price
Materials, tools and firings
The monthly fee includes clay, glazes and the use of all the tools and materials needed during class. Firings for pieces made as part of the usual learning process are also included.
There is no strict limit on the number of pieces. If you would like to make a particularly large piece or a project that requires an exceptional amount of clay, we will discuss it with you in advance, as an additional charge may apply.
Students learn how to glaze their own pieces during class, always with guidance. Once the pieces are finished and ready for collection, we will let you know and ask you to collect them from the ceramics studio within approximately one month.
You do not need to bring an apron: aprons are available at the studio.
From the pottery wheel to the finished piece
You shape the piece on the pottery wheel and decide whether to keep it for further work.
The piece loses some of its moisture until it reaches the right consistency to be handled without losing its shape.
The base is trimmed, the thickness is refined and the piece is then left to dry completely before its first firing.
A piece does not come off the pottery wheel finished on the same day. Students learn how to glaze their work during class, after which each piece goes through the necessary firings.
Pieces are usually ready approximately 3 to 4 weeks after the process is complete, depending on drying and firing times.
We will let you know when your pieces are finished and ready for collection. From that point, we ask that they are collected within approximately one month.
Ceramics is a craft process, and cracks, warping or breakage can occur during drying or firing. Although we handle every piece carefully throughout the process, these are natural risks in ceramics and cannot always be avoided.

These classes are suitable if you want to learn wheel throwing through weekly practice, start from scratch with guidance, continue after an introduction class or improve specific technical skills.

What to bring
– Wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting dirty.
– Short nails are recommended for greater precision when working with clay.
– If you have long hair, please tie it back.
– You do not need to buy any tools: they are included in the classes.
– You do not need to bring an apron either: aprons are available at the studio.
– The minimum age for regular pottery wheel classes is 16.

Do I need any previous experience?
No. You can start from scratch. If you have used a pottery wheel before, the guidance and exercises will be adapted to your level.
Can I book a single session?
Yes. Single sessions are available for €35, subject to availability.
How long does it take to learn centring?
There is no fixed number of classes. It depends on each person’s coordination, practice and pace. The initial goal is to understand the movements and repeat them correctly.
Will I take home a finished piece on the same day?
No. Pieces need to lose moisture, be trimmed, dry completely and go through the required firing and finishing stages.

Can I make up a missed class?
Yes. You can make up a class if you cancel at least 12 hours in advance and there is space in another group. Classes cancelled with less than 12 hours’ notice cannot be made up.

Are the classes only for adults?
The minimum age for regular pottery wheel classes is 16.
